“Please Restart Windows Before Installing New Programs” Message
When you install the Siemens Automation Software as TIA Portal, WinCC Flexible, Prosave…, you might see a message “Please reboot before installing any more programs” or “Please restart Windows Before Installing New Programs“, and the software installation process will stop.
The issue is that the Windows OS has registered one or more write-protected files for deletion or renaming. This is the cause of the behaviour described above and cannot be influenced by the relevant software.
How To Fix “Please Restart Windows Before Installing New Programs”
You can fix the above issues by making changes in the Windows Registry. In general, no warranty can be given for direct changes made in the Registry because this is entirely the user’s responsibility. In any event, you are advised to make a backup of the Registry before undertaking the actions described here. Furthermore, these settings are computer-specific. This means that when you copy the project to another computer, you must set it up again. Therefore, below we have 2 methods to fix it:
Method 1
- Open the Windows Registry Editor by
- Pressing the “[Windows] + [R]” buttons. Enter “regedit” in the input field and click OK.
- Or enter “regedit” in the Windows Search box and “Run as Administrator”
- In the Registry Editor, you navigate to the path: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager“.
- Then, check whether the value name “PendingFileRenameOperations” is in the path.
- Delete the entire “PendingFileRenameOperations” entry and then close Registry Editor (not just the contents).
- After that, close the registry editor and try to run the installation of the Siemens Automation software again.
Method 2
You can also delete the entry in the Registry Editor by:
- Starting the command prompt as an administrator
- And entering the following command (Copy and paste into the Windows command):
reg delete “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager” /v “PendingFileRenameOperations” /f
- Enter and check the message: “The operation completed successfully“
- Finally, try to run the installation of the Siemens Automation software again without the error “Please reboot before installing any more programs” or “Please restart Windows Before Installing New Programs“
Note
When you are installing S7 Technology, the same thing happens as described above. Also, check the entry in the following code in the Windows Registry: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce“. If, after a reboot, a value is entered here, delete it. Restart your computer and then try the installation again.
